Historical Provenance · Dundee, Scotland (1842)

Robert Murray M’Cheyne and the Daily Calendar

In December 1842, pastor Robert Murray M’Cheyne of St. Peter’s Church in Dundee prepared a pastoral calendar to protect his flock against barren, intermittent reading habits. Recognizing that believers frequently drift into reading only their favorite chapters, M’Cheyne crafted a mathematically balanced itinerary: 4 chapters daily, traversing Genesis, Matthew, Ezra, and Acts on January 1st to encompass the Law, the Gospels, the historical restorations, and the Apostolic church simultaneously.

M’Cheyne’s Pastoral Vision (1842):

In his original pastoral preface, M’Cheyne warned that structured Bible reading must never degenerate into lifeless formality or self-righteous complacency. By pairing private secret devotions with shared family worship, the calendar unites intimate communion with God and mutual accountability in the home.
